Methods of Speed Reading

To be successful in the contemporary world people must have many knowledge and skills and to use them in the proper way. One of the most useful skills for all people, especially for students, lawyers and other persons who have a necessity to read and understand a lot of information, is the speed reading. There also two other important aspects of speed reading: the people have to understand given information and to retain it. According to the researches there are in general five types of reading and each people choose one of these five methods depending on the situation and the needs of the particular moment. These five types of reading are: skimming, scanning, light reading, word by word reading and reading to study. One of the most widespread types of reading is skimming.
One of the most widespread methods is light reading. This type of reading has also other name: “leisure reading”. This is the reading for pleasure without time restrictions. In this case the person reads in the comfortable pace, with understanding of the text. Usually the speed of the light reading is about 100-220 words per minute.
The next method is called “word by word reading”. This method needs lot of time and string concentration. The person has to read with the help of this method in the case if the material is complicated and it is hard to understand it. This method is the best for such materials as scientific formulae, or technical materials.
The next strategy is called “reading for study”. The aim of this method is to understand the depth of the material. The stages of the reading for study are: overview, question, reading, repetition and review.
- Overview means the skimming through the material with the aim to understand the key points.
- Try to formulate the questions you hope the following text will answer.
- After it read the text carefully and slowly.
- Try to express and to write down the key points of the chapter you have just read. Do it from memory.
- Remember the questions which you have formulated and try to answer them.
